Nooka Shepherd (b. 1998) is a multimedia artist based in London. Her practice is the excavation of her internal landscape and works in paint, sculpture and embroidery aim to communicate a deeply personal and intimate relationship to the natural world.
Finding inspiration in regional folkloric imagination and the relationship between magic, art and sexuality, Nooka processes her understanding of the animated natural world through experimentation with symmetry and mark making. The monstrous feminine and the mythic hybrid are recurrent figures in Shepherd's work; for her, the creative process is a means of accessing and communicating with 'more-than-human' forms of life and an invitation to break through linear temporal barriers. A marked focus on femininity, matrilineal ancestry and fertility are conduits for Nooka to connect with those who precede them. She aims to reach back beyond the human to our animal, plant and microbial ancestors.
